Matcha is trendy for a reason: It has major health benefits, plus it's pretty enough for a morning Insta.
MARIA MARLOWE
If you haven't seen matcha tea popping up in stores across the country, well, we're really not sure why—the stuff is everywhere, including your grocery store or local Starbucks. And it's popular for good reason. The stuff is loaded with health benefits that can't be passed up, including:
Weight loss: Matcha contains a powerful antioxidant known as EGCG, which is most well-known for being found in green tea, and it can aid in weight loss by supporting a healthy metabolism. In a 2005 study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participants who drank green tea extract daily lost twice as much weight in 12 weeks compared to participants who didn't.
Stress reduction: Studies show that matcha tea helps reduce psychological and physiological stress. Unlike coffee, which can increase anxiety and make you jittery, this basically has the exact opposite effect.
Antioxidant protection: Antioxidants help reduce inflammation, protect your body from free radical damage, and may even aid in cancer prevention. Matcha tea has a ton—including that EGCG we talked about before—as well as polyphenols, which can protect against heart disease and cancer and better regulate blood pressure.
While matcha is traditionally consumed as a frothy tea, you can actually do so much more with it. (See: 6 Ways to Cook with Matcha Tea.) One fun, tasty idea: A breakfast smoothie bowl. With nothing but fruit, greens, and seeds, this matcha smoothie bowl tastes like dessert—but it's healthy enough for breakfast. (Want more dessert-worthy recipes?
